Importance of Men’s Yearly Exams

Each June, we recognize National Men’s Health month for the purpose of raising awareness of preventable health issues and to encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men. According to the CDC, women are 100% more likely than men to seek preventative health care. Among the many possible reasons men don’t seek medical attention, the most common is that most men wait for symptoms. Most diseases are far advanced by the time someone sees symptoms, which is why we recommend regular health exams and tests to find problems before they start, or at least in the very early stages when your chances for treatment and cure are higher.

By getting the right health services, screenings and treatments, you will be taking proactive steps to better your chances of living a longer, healthier life. In general, these are the most common medical exams we recommend for men at every stage of their life:

20s:

  • Annual physical, including blood pressure, height/weight checks
  • Testicular cancer screening
  • Cholesterol testing (every 5 years)

30s:

  • Annual physical exam, including blood pressure height/weight checks
  • Testicular cancer screening
  • Cholesterol testing (every 5 years)
  • Vision examination

40s:

  • Annual physical exam, including blood pressure, height/weight checks
  • Testicular cancer screening
  • Cholesterol testing (every 5 years)
  • Screening for prostate cancer
  • Diabetes screening (every 3 years over the age of 45)
  • Vision examination

50s:

  • Annual physical exam, including blood pressure, height/weight checks
  • Testicular cancer screening
  • Cholesterol testing (every 5 years)
  • Annual screening for Type II diabetes
  • Screening for lipid disorders
  • Annual electrocardiogram
  • Vision and hearing examinations
  • Prostate cancer screening
  • Colon cancer screening with fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy at age 50
  • Depression screening

60s:

  • Annual physical exam, including blood pressure, height/weight checks
  • Testicular cancer screening
  • Prostate cancer screening
  • Screening for lipid disorders
  • Annual electrocardiogram
  • Vision and hearing examinations
  • Osteoporosis screening
  • Depression screening
  • Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease screenings

70s and up:

  • Annual physical exam, including blood pressure, height/weight checks
  • Testicular cancer screening
  • Prostate cancer screening
  • Screening for lipid disorders
  • Annual electrocardiogram
  • Vision and hearing examinations
  • Osteoporosis screening
  • General screening until age 75
  • Depression screening
  • Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease screenings
